The Application of Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge in the Measurement of Semiconductor Material Thickness

What’s Semiconductor?

Semiconductor is a material with conductivity between conductor and insulator at room temperature. Semiconductor is used in integrated circuits, consumer electronics, communication systems, photovoltaic power generation, lighting, high-power power conversion and other fields such as diodes are made of semiconductors.

Properties and Applications of Semiconductor Materials

Semiconductor materials have some special properties. For example, the relationship between the resistivity and temperature of the semiconductor can be made into a thermal element for automatic control (thermistor); Using its photosensitive characteristics can be made into automatic control of the photosensitive elements, such as photocells, photocells and photo resistors.

Semiconductor Silicon Material Sample Testing

We received our customer's sample of semiconductor silicon material, it’s dark blue and very brittle, with very stable chemical properties. It’s thickness is about 0.75mm, width is about 1.5-2.6mm, our customer want to use ultrasonic thickness gauge to measure its thickness, to  confirm whether the material thickness meets the standard and is uniform.

Measurement Analysis and Results

Due to the small size of the sample, a small contact surface probe should be selected. We use the YUSHI PM5 Gen2 and pen type delay line probe to measure. However, due to the narrow delay block end of the pen type probe, it is difficult to keep the probe perpendicular to the surface of the tested material, which can result in small or even no echo signal. At this point, a testing bracket is helpful, its narrow delay block end can couple the probe to a very small measurement surface, making the measurement more stable, with clear echoes and correct measurements.
