Application of Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge in Titanium Metal Thickness Measurement
What is titanium metal?
Titanium is a silvery-white transition metal characterized by light weight, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance. Due to its stable chemical properties, good resistance to high and low temperatures, strong acid and alkali, as well as high strength and low density, it is known as the "space metal".

Advantages of Titanium
High Strength: Titanium metal has excellent strength and is suitable for the application of high strength materials.
Corrosion Resistance : titanium metal can resist chemical corrosion and extend the life of the material.
Low Density: Titanium is lightweight and suitable for applications where weight reduction is required, such as in the aerospace field.
Biocompatibility: Titanium metal has good compatibility with human tissue and is often used in medical devices and artificial joints.
High temperature resistance: Titanium metal has excellent high temperature resistance and remains stable in high temperature environments.
Lightweight: Due to its low density and high strength, titanium metal contributes to lightweight product design, enhancing efficiency.
Durability: Titanium metal has excellent durability, extending product life and reducing maintenance costs.
Environmental Recyclable: Titanium metal can be recycled and reused, which is conducive to resource recycling and environmental protection.
Disadvantages of Titanium
High Cost: Due to the poor machinability of titanium materials and the difficulty in cutting and processing, the production costs are relatively high.
Difficult to process: Titanium alloys are difficult to manufacture and require special equipment and processes, as well as high skills of workers.
Applications of titanium metal
Titanium metal is widely used in aerospace, medical, chemical, marine engineering and other fields. In the medical field, titanium metal is used to manufacture orthopedic implants, dental implants, etc. In the aviation field, it is used to reduce the weight of aircraft; in the chemical industry, it is used to manufacture corrosion-resistant equipment, etc.
Sample Material
The safety of parts affects the overall safety of the product. We have received product samples from some aviation, aerospace and defense technology research and development companies, generally in the thickness of 0.17-0.3mm.

Measuring Difficulty
Based on this thickness range, we selected PM5 Gen2 ultrasonic thickness gauge, using high-frequency narrow pulse single crystal delay line probe for measurement. I-ME mode (multiple wave verification mode) is an ideal method for measuring the thickness of thin parts, which can obtain accurate, highly repeatable, and small error (0.001mm) thickness values. This sample is semicircular, wall thickness is only 0.17-0.3mm. To measure this type of curved thin parts, we need to use a probe with a higher frequency and a smaller contact surface to obtain good measurement results.
Measuring Result
The test results of using PM5 Gen2 standard a 15M narrow pulse composite crystal probe are as follows:

It can be seen that there are multiple bottom echoes on the A-scan interface. After multiple echo verification, a stable measurement value can be obtained.
In order to measure smaller contact surfaces more stably, a 20M high-frequency probe and probe holder were selected, and good measurement results were achieved using the I-ME (multiple-wave verification mode) measurement mode.

The following figure shows the test results of using a 20MHz high-frequency small-diameter probe + probe holder.

Comparing the two probes, it can be seen that the measurement result of the 20MHz small diameter probe + probe holder is also very good, with high sensitivity and good resolution, which can clearly distinguish multiple bottom echoes, measurement results are accurate and reliable.
Ultrasonic thickness gauges are fast, simple, and accurate for measuring the thickness of titanium metal, making them a primary means and method for quality control in product manufacturing.
