How to Calibrate and Use YUSHI UM-5DL Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge?

We often encounter customers asking how to calibrate UM-5DL, so this article introduces three calibration methods of UM-5DL ultrasonic thickness gauges.

Probe Zero Calibration

1.After pressing the CAL/ON key to turn on the device, the screen displays the 0.00 interface.

2.Probe Settings:In the Probe Settings, select the probe model corresponding to the instrument. Set the sound speed to the known sound speed of the manual.

3.Use the zero position test block provided by the instrument to zero the probe.

Press the CAL/ON to enter the calibration program,then press the CAL/ON again to enter the probe zero calibration, follow the prompt to put the probe on the provided zero test block of the instruments. Keep coupling and then press the CAL/ON key to display "move the probe away".

One-Point Calibration

Find a test block that is made of the same material as the tested workpiece and measure its thickness by caliper. Then apply the couplant to the surface. Turn on the device and press the CAL/ON to enter the calibration surface, and select "One-point Calibration". Follow the prompt to place the probe on the zero test block, pay attention to applying the couplant. According to the prompt, move the probe away from the zero test block and put the probe on the standard calibration block.After removing the probe,inpuit the thickness of the standard calibration block and then press the CAL/ON. The displayed sound velocity is the sound velocity of the tested material. Press "DONE" and "MODE" return back to the measuring interface.

Two-Point Calibration

Find the two test blocks of the same material but different thickness, measure the thickness of these 2 blocks using caliper.Applying couplant to the surface. Turn on the UM-5DL ultrasonic thickness tester and press CAL/ON to enter the calibration interface. Select "Two-Point Calibration". Place the probe on the thin test block(applying the couplant), move the probe away and put the probe on the thick test block. After removing the probe,enter the thickness of the test block and press the CAL/ON. The displayed sound velocity is the sound velocity of the tested workpiece. Press "DONE" and "MODE" to return back to the measuring interface.
